Learning Lab

The target audience for 2006-2007 will reach beyond the residents of Laguna Beach and go into other surrounding communities in Orange County and Riverside County.  Pre- and post-tour activities are developed and offered to group tours, with a focus on school groups.  The Learning Lab helps fill the void created by the decrease in visual arts education in the California public schools by developing programs that meet the California content standards–the basis for curriculum development as well as student testing and assessment.  Occupying most of the lower leve of the Museum, The Learning Lab is also an exhibition space for a rotating chronological presentation of the Museum’s permanent collection.  Each piece selected in this exhibition from the permanent collection highlights an important moment in California art history and is accompanied with an extensive didactic panel.  The Learning Lab also features the Collection in Context Timeline, which is a large-format visual tool that tracks California art history to worldwide art movements and historical events.  Currently, the pieces selected from the permanent collection on exhibit have been curated to mirror the timeline’s chronological approach to the context of California art history.  The Museum has also received funding to publish a full-color educational handout for the permanent collection to accompany this space and act as a supplement for the education programs, like the third and fourth grade program.  A projected audience of 800 children and adults is expected to attend Learning Lab programs and classes.

Young Artist Society Gallery

The Young Artists Society Gallery is a museum gallery space that features exhibitions of K-12 works of art from Orange County Schools. Students in YASG exhibitions receive recognition and value for participating in artistic activities and are introduced to the inner-workings of the Museum. This program is a hands-on process that can include concepts of exhibition development, coordination, and installation. This program provides a direct connection between the artists, their families, and the Laguna Art Museum.

These events are designed to support state curriculum frameworks and facilitate connections between the classroom and the Museum.
