Los Angeles artist Alex Weinstein is fascinated by the Sublime and seeks to explore this powerful idea in his paintings and sculptures, taking cues from artists of the past such as Caspar David Friedrich, Claude Monet, J. M. W. Turner, and Mark Rothko. He is an avid surfer, and his paintings and sculptures are often based on views of the ocean surface, hovering between figuration and abstraction. Weinstein graduated from Brown University in 1992 with dual BA degrees in Visual Arts and English. His work has been featured and reviewed in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Art in America, and the Los Angeles Times.

Swell Model (The Night) consists of a single pour of polyester resin tinted with oil paint mixed from the artist’s palette. The work was inspired in part by ice fisherman withdrawing cut sections of frozen lake bed to enable them to drop their hooked lines. It is his largest mass-casting project to date.
