The son of another celebrated California artist, Ed Moses, Andy Moses grew up near the ocean and deeply absorbed the influences of light, sky, and water. From 1979 to 1981 he attended the California Institute of Arts, where he focused on performance, film, and painting while studying with Michael Asher, John Baldessari, and Barbara Kruger. Moses practices a type of process painting that is abstract and representational at the same time. His techniques incorporate chemical reactions, viscosity interference, and gravity dispersion to create elaborate compositions mimicking nature and its forces. “All the work I’ve ever done has always been about interacting with natural processes and then reacting to what those natural processes do,” he has said. “So it’s a constant back-and-forth process until the painting is finished.”
