Ben Jackel is best known for handcrafted monochromatic sculptures in which he addresses themes of empire and conflict. His fascination with warfare and weaponry takes various forms, from a passion for military history to the avid pursuit of archery and axe-throwing. The drawings of his Arrows Series clearly recall maps and diagrams showing battle strategies. Moved by the catastrophes of the Iraq War and Hurricane Katrina, Jackel has devoted much of his career to an ongoing artistic project exploring the tools and icons associated with man-made disasters. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder and UCLA, and has been represented by L.A. Louver since 2007.
