Brian Robertson’s paintings turn still-life objects, interiors, and dream-like deserts into visual puzzles that suggest introspection and longing. His subjects are without pre-determined meaning in themselves, but their interactions and placement in space create a psychological pull, that of a feeling felt though not named. He references the forced perspectives of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints and the narrative strategies of the proto-surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico, while also drawing upon his experiences with graphic design and commercial mural painting.
