Art Auction 2018 | Catherine Kaleel

Catherine Kaleel

Mego 2-XL Robot
Oil paint on sealed wood, 2017
18 x 14 inches
Courtesy of the artist and saltfineart
Value: $1,000
Starting bid: $500

A graduate of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and a current MFA student at Laguna College of Art and Design, Catherine Kaleel bases her current artistic project around the idea of nostalgia. In her realistic paintings of mementos from the 1980s and early ’90s, the viewer can take advantage of the scale of the work to observe the details and components of these now defunct objects. A whimsically designed eight-track tape player, Mego 2-XL Robot appears with a Johnny Cash album in its slot—the music Kaleel was listening to when she painted it.
