One of contemporary art’s most intimate chroniclers of domesticity, Daniel Gerwin draws much of his inspiration from his experience as a parent. His paintings are highly autobiographical works with unique titles referring to moments from his family life. They stand out in their refusal to conform to conventional standards of presentation, their mostly non-rectangular configurations reflecting the unpredictability and formlessness of everyday life. On textured wood surfaces he creates abstractions that often bear an uncanny resemblance to quotidian objects and forms. A graduate of Yale, Columbia, and the University of Pennsylvania, Gerwin is also a prolific writer on art, contributing regularly to Artforum and Hyperallergic.
