Don Suggs was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1945 and grew up in San Diego. He received three degrees from UCLA— his BA in 1969, his MA in 1971, and his MFA in 1972—won two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and has been represented by LA Louver in Los Angeles since 1977. He has taught painting and drawing at UCLA since 1983. Suggs has produced a stylistically diverse body of work in various media, including drawing, sculpture, collage, and painting. In 2007 a thirty-year retrospective of his work was titled One Man Group Show to underscore his versatility and eclecticism. In Cathedral he places one of his signature circles over a photographic image of Cathedral Rock in Yosemite, an arresting contrast of geometric and organic forms, the man-made and the natural, that deliberately disrupts the viewer’s expectations of a picturesque view.
