Acclaimed for her simplified yet lifelike sculptures of animals, Gwynn Murrill has been living and working in California since receiving her BFA and MFA from UCLA in the early 1970s. She seeks to capture her animals in essence, describing movements and moments that appear both habitual and graceful. “My interest lies in using my chosen subject as a means to create a form that is simultaneously abstract and figurative,” she has written. “I enjoy the challenge of trying to take the form that natures makes so well and to derive my own interpretation of it.” Murrill is a prolific artist who has had dozens of solo exhibitions throughout the world and in 1986 received a Guggenheim Fellowship.
