A graduate of UC Santa Barbara and the Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of Fine Art in Florence, John Nava is one of the leading practitioners of realist painting in the US. Inspired by the technique of the Old Masters, he paints generally traditional subject matter, including religious scenes and figures. Between 1999 and 2002 he designed a monumental series of tapestries, The Communion of the Saints, for the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles; the tapestries were woven in Belgium on the basis of Nava’s painted studies for the figures.

Hendry’s 4, a tranquil scene on Hendry’s Beach in Santa Barbara, is part of a series of paintings featured in Nava’s one-man exhibition Facing West in 2009. The exhibition’s title referred to Walt Whitman’s poem “Facing West from California’s Shores.”
