Born in Hungary, Jules Engel immigrated to the United States in 1930 and arrived in Hollywood in 1937. There he worked on Disney’s Fantasia, bringing color and choreography to the production, especially in his concepts for the Russian and Chinese dance sequences. In contrast to his work in animation, his early paintings were mostly non-figurative. Inspired by pioneers of abstraction such as Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Alexander Calder, he combined the sense of color he developed as an animator with a genius for geometrical design. He remained active as an artist up to his death in 2003.
