Kaori Fukuyama was born and raised in Kumamoto, Japan. Drawing on her upbringing around Japanese gardens and her previous career as a landscape designer, she takes inspiration from the interplay of color and light in natural surroundings. Her quasi-minimalist paintings have been shown in multiple galleries and juried exhibitions across California, and are in private collections in the US and overseas. Fukuyama’s process involves the careful, patient blending of multiple paint layers, following in the meditative craft-making tradition of her Japanese heritage. She writes: “I create fields of color and light in an attempt to capture the radiance we encounter in everyday life but beyond its standard context, by using an abstract, minimal, and direct language.”
