Born in San Bernardino, from an early age Mary-Austin Klein was attracted to the California landscape—both the inland deserts and the ocean vistas from the Palos Verdes Peninsula, where she lived from the age of ten. Klein studied at Otis Art Institute and now divides her time between her home in Echo Park and a 1950s-era desert homestead cabin in Twentynine Palms. She finds inspiration in vistas ranging from remote and pristine desert to intersections of man and nature.

“I paint impressive vistas in small scale so that the viewer is brought into intimate contact with them, just as I am drawn into them when I paint. The goal is to pull you deep into a painting so you will get lost in it. My small works are “hand-helds”—grand scenes in miniature form—that are easy to transport and display, referencing the era before photography.”
