Phillip K. Smith III received his BFA and Bachelor of Architecture degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design before returning to the Southern California desert where he was raised. His spectacular ¼ Mile Arc installation on Main Beach was the centerpiece of the museum’s Art & Nature event in 2016. On a more intimate scale, he creates in his Faceted Disc series a subtle interplay of light and shadow across minimalist three-dimensional surfaces. “I kept my first Faceted Disc on the wall of my studio for months,” he has said. “It was the most minimal piece I had ever created. It seemed so odd, yet at the same time so beautiful. In the end, I feel like that work taps into the language of light and shadow that exists in the real world. The Little San Bernardino Mountains, which I can see from my studio, transform every day from a highly textured three-dimensional surface to a monochromatic silhouette. That transformation is the inspiration for the Faceted Discs.”
