ABOUT THE TRIP

The CCC will travel to San Diego for the day to explore artists’ studios and private collections. The group will also take a tour of outdoor art in UC San Diego’s Stuart Collection, including the most recently installed work by Do Ho Suh.

ITINERARY

8:45 a.m. Meet at Laguna Beach High School

10:30 a.m. Strauss Collection
Iris and Matthew Strauss have amassed one of the largest and critically-acclaimed private contemporary art collections. They are listed in ARTnews’ Top 200 Collectors in the World. Since the mid-eighties they have collected a contemporary and avant-garde art collection that encompasses 20,000 square feet and two houses on seven acres in Rancho Santa Fe. The main house includes a 4,000-square-foot gallery known as “Rancho del Arte.” Their estate is a testament to the couples’ passion and commitment to the arts.

3:30 p.m. Stuart Collection at UCSD
The Stuart Collection at University of California, San Diego contains a unique collection of site-specific sculptures by leading artist of our time. Under an agreement formed in 1982, the entire campus may be considered as sites for commissioned sculpture. It is further distinguished from a traditional sculpture garden by integration of some of the projects with university buildings. The collection includes works by Do Ho Suh, Barbara Kruger, and Tim Hawkinson.

The Contemporary Collectors Council is a support group of Laguna Art Museum that encourages a greater understanding of contemporary art, with a focus on the art of California. Members are offered an ongoing program of trips, activities, and events, including in-depth tours of artists’ studios, private collections, galleries, and museum exhibitions. Proceeds from CCC dues, trips, and other activities support Laguna Art Museum’s contemporary exhibitions, related educational programs, and purchases of contemporary art for the collection.
