About the artist
Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Charles Arnoldi attended junior college in California, where he was encouraged to apply to art school by one of his professors. After brief periods of study there and at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, he decided to pursue his art on his own. Arnoldi is well known nationally and internationally for his brightly-colored, abstract paintings that incorporate the use of wood as an expressive medium, often using tree branches and twigs.

About the work

Untitled
Gouache on paper, 2012

This gouache is from the artist’s latest body of work, which is entitled Case Study. The Case Study houses were experiments in American residential architecture sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, which commissioned major architects to design and build inexpensive and efficient model homes for the United States residential housing boom caused by the end of World War II and the return of millions of soldiers. Arnoldi didn’t set out to create a series inspired by the Case Study houses; the connection came after the fact when he’d completed a number of the larger canvases and was thinking of what to title them. Having just visited a Case Study home in Los Angeles, his admiration of its clean lines and use of glass were still fresh in his mind and he decided to name the group Case Study.
