About the artist

Don Bachardy is an accomplished portrait artist and much-published author. He was born in Los Angeles in 1934. He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and the Slade School of Art in London. His first one-man exhibition was held in October 1961 at the Redfern Gallery in London. He has since had one-man exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston, and New York. He was the subject of a 2008 documentary film, Chris & Don: A Love Story, which detailed his lifelong relationship with the celebrated author Christopher Isherwood.

Bachardy will paint a portrait of the successful bidder, or a subject of his or her choice, in a sitting at the artist’s studio in Santa Monica. Bachardy’s celebrity sitters have included some of the most acclaimed artists of Southern California, including Peter Alexander, Larry Bell, Billy Al Bengston, Robert Irwin, Ed Moses, and Ed Ruscha. The example shown here is a portrait of Robert Hayden, the museum’s board chair, painted in 2009.

If you cannot attend the event, but would like to bid on this work of art, please fill out the following absentee bid form (one form per work of art) with your maximum bid amount (please follow bid increment guidelines for each work of art).

To allow time for processing, bids must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. (PST) on Friday, February 6, 2015. Someone will contact you to obtain your credit card information. Your credit card will only be charged if your bid is successful. If identical absentee bids remain at the close of the Auction, Laguna Art Museum will give precedent to the first bid received. If your bid is successful, a museum representative will contact you at the email address or phone number provided below within 5 business days of the event.

    I wish to place the following bid for Auction 2015 to be held on Saturday, February 7, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. These bids are to be executed by Laguna Art Museum, up to the maximum price I have indicated for this work of art. I have entered into a bidding contract to purchase these items, if my bid is successful. I understand that if my bid is successful, I will be obligated to pay the purchase price, which will be the sum of the final bid plus 8% Laguna Beach sales tax.

    Shipping or pick up of Auction artwork is the responsibility of the buyer. If I am the successful bidder, I will arrange pickup of my property from Laguna Art Museum, 307 Cliff Drive, Laguna Beach, CA 92651 within 5 business days.
