While a student at the Rhode Island School of Design, Eric Gerdau was accepted into the prestigious European Honors Program, spent a year of intensive study abroad in Rome, and in May 1996 received the Guggenheim Award for Painting. After graduating from RISD he traveled frequently to Laguna Beach and was inspired to create paintings celebrating the atmospheric conditions of coastal California. He now maintains a working studio/gallery in Laguna Beach.

Reverie is representative of Horizons, an ongoing series of paintings by Gerdau that seem at once contemporary and reminiscent of the great Laguna Beach painters of the past. “These paintings celebrate atmospheric horizons of the natural, exterior world in order to illuminate inner, emotional states,” he has said. “The horizons inquire into the space between lived experience and transcendent imagination to evoke tranquility despite impending change.”
