About the artist
Gerardo Monterrubio was born in Oaxaca, Mexico. He obtained a BFA from California State University, Long Beach, where he studied Ceramic Arts under the guidance of Tony Marsh and Kristen Morgin. In 2013, he received his MFA from UCLA. Paying homage to the history of ceramics, Monterrubio’s work plays with the anthropological idea of ceramic objects as containers of cultural information. Influenced by murals, prison tattoos, graffiti art, and old etchings, his works take us onto the margins of contemporary society and invite us to imagine narratives that play out within that world.

About the work
Scooby WS White Fence LS is from the series Meditations of Masculinity, which was the artist’s MFA thesis show. Scooby is a nickname of one of his former friends, an active member of the West Side White Fence gang who is now serving a life sentence in prison. The heavily tattooed face is common among imprisoned gang members. The tattoos are a mask, a tool of intimidation, a sign of total dedication to the gang, and inked scars that hold the secrets of a life formed by wounds.
