About the artist

Jennifer Michelle Shaw showed artistic inclinations early on, and as a self-trained painter she received accolades for her mostly photorealistic art throughout her youth. She also developed an affinity for black-and-white, indigo, and sepia photography and while in high school built a darkroom at home. Studying at UC Santa Barbara, she won a fellowship to study at the Sorbonne and the Center for Critical Studies in Paris. Her diverse interests in Film Studies and Linguistics, and the philosophies of Dadaism, Existentialism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Symbolism would leave indelible marks on her aesthetic. Years later, having moved to Laguna Beach, Jennifer found herself having to commute past local galleries and magnificent sunsets every day, increasingly yearning for her artistic past-times over her corporate climbing. Since 2008, she has pursued her art professionally; renowned gallerist Peter Blake quickly recognized her distinct self-made talent and hosted a solo show for her at the Laguna Beach Artwalk 10 Year Anniversary Show. Her entire black-and-white cloudscape collection sold out in 2 hours.

About the work

The View from Here Is Forever
Acrylic on canvas, December 2012

The View From Here Is Forever captures a sweeping sunset scene from Newport Center all the way to Palos Verdes (the far right hill), as seen from Turtle Rock in Irvine right behind UCI, at the artist’s parents’ house. The painting was created from a photograph taken by the artist on the evening of Thanksgiving 2010. She texted the photo to her boyfriend and his dying father, who found it a life-affirming moment of shared beauty, something that was rare during this time.
