Los Angeles artist Moira Hahn’s woodblock prints are colorful and allegorical, showing her great love for animals along with her admiration for the Japanese ukiyo-e masters, Persian miniatures, and Tibetan Thanka paintings. Hahn received her BFA in Drawing and Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and her MFA from California State University, Fullerton in 2000.

Throughout her childhood, an uncle stationed in Kobe, Japan sent Hahn’s family traditional Japanese artwork, crafts, and toys. The Sumi-e scrolls, painted silk cocoons, miniature models of tea-houses, Barbie-doll-sized futons, and other gifts have informed her aesthetics ever since. In Birds Eye View, from her Year of the Rooster series, the stormy grey sky sets the stage for a dramatic encounter between birds and cat, both posing, human-like, in ornate garments. The detailed patterns and deep colors add to the intensity of the moment.
