About the artist
Rachel Uchizono was born in San Diego into a musical family. At an early age she learned to play the flute, guitar, and piano, as well as singing and writing songs. After marrying and raising two boys, she began to pursue plein air painting, inspired to paint the canyons and beaches near her home in Laguna Beach. She has taken part in workshops with Ray Roberts, Ken Auster, Mark Kerckhoff, Saim Caglayan, and Cynthia Britain.

About the work
“The Laguna Canyon Wilderness Park is my favorite place to paint.  To get to this oak tree, you park in the Willow Canyon staging area just south of El Toro and take the trail towards Laguna Laurel.  If you turn back and look towards El Toro Road, you will see this oak tree on the right perched on a boulder. This painting started out as a 12 x 16 plein air study.  I painted this larger version in the studio.  The outdoor study caught the details, colors, and play of light.   I believe the larger painting invokes that feeling.  I am inspired by the rugged spirit of Laguna Canyon.” —Rachel Uchizono
