“I was instantly drawn to Baker’s painting because of the immediacy of the composition—the intense feeling it brought to me of being right there in the bow of the sailboat. With thick application of pigment, Baker creates a realistic image while utilizing abstract, simplified forms, and light and dark contrasts. The white birds—likely Mute Swans—are almost humorous as they float magically on the water.”
— Janet Blake, Curator of Historical Art

Best known for his long and successful career in the entertainment industry, Richard Baker has developed a sophisticated but accessible painting style enhanced by years of creative experience in film and television. His intense colors and simplified planes imply form rather than describe detail, combining motifs of abstraction with a sense of Californian optimism. Baker’s techniques are influenced by renowned realist painter Rackstraw Downes, under whom he studied at the University of Pennsylvania.

Georgica Pond on Long Island is the site of many celebrity summer homes, including those of Steven Spielberg and Calvin Klein Baker depicts a leisure scene that immerses the viewer in blue waves and blue sky, a setting that, in his words, “needs no explanation.”
