Los Angeles artist Shepard Fairey first became known in 1989 for his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” sticker campaign. Straddling fine, commercial, and street art, his work resists easy classification. He exploits the gaps between these genres to produce works that frequently take on social and political issues. He became widely known during the 2008 presidential election for his Barack Obama “Hope” poster. Fairey graduated from the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts in Idyllwild, CA, and obtained a BFA degree in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design.
