“Sherie Franssen’s Me and My Chauffer is an homage to the power of painting. Its size enables me to surrender to the pure physicality of the paint while I lose myself in Franssen’s gestural strokes and lyrical colors. In her treatment of paint, she manages to navigate the perfect balance between control and abandon, with the imagery similarly oscillating between abstract and representational, while always returning to the sheer enjoyment of paint applied to canvas by the hand of a master.” – Marinta Skupin, Curator of Education

About the artist
Born in Torrance, California, in 1952, Sherie Franssen earned her BFA in Drawing and Painting from California State University, Long Beach, in 1999. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the country, and notably was selected by the eminent curator and writer Peter Selz for his 2011 show HEADS at the Dolby Chadwick Gallery in San Francisco. It has been reviewed in the San Francisco Chronicle; the Los Angeles Times; Art Ltd.; and New American Paintings.

About the work
“The narratives expressed by her paintings derive from the confluence of the artist’s emotional logic and the oil’s material properties rather than from reason or formal objectivity—the story is in the honesty of the gesture, the sensual in the materiality of the paint.” —Anita Katz, San Francisco Examiner
