BEST KEPT SECRET

Laguna Art Museum published this 180-page recto-verso soft-cover book in conjunction with its Pacific Standard Time exhibition Best Kept Secret: UCI and the Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California, 1964-1971. This scholarly publication with primary research on UCI and the development of its art department is the first publication to address the early years of the department and it is also the first major publication done on the subject.

UC Irvine was a hotbed of creativity and experimentation in the 1960s and early ’70s, a hub of innovation where exceptional teachers such as Tony DeLap, Robert Irwin, and Vija Celmins taught talented students like Alexis Smith, Chris Burden, and Nancy Buchanan. All but forgotten in the intervening years, this exceptional time and place is now recovered at Laguna Art Museum in Best Kept Secret.

Best Kept Secret anchors UCI’s and Orange County’s important contribution to the development of West Coast art, revising and correcting existing information on this very important era of California art.

This full-color publication includes ephemera, an extensive timeline, and highlights the 38 featured exhibition artists. Peter Frank is the main essayist, and contributing writers include Cole Akers, Janet Blake, Jacqueline Bunge, and Grace Kook-Anderson. Marilyn Nix contributed to the rich section on ephemera; Cathy Curtis serves as the editor; and Garland Kirpatrick, an award-winning designer, curator, and educator, designed the book.

Printed locally.

This publication won Honorable Mention for Exhibition Catalogues in the 2012 AAM Museum Publications Design Competition.
