Exhibit Overview

Some Fuzzy Logic: The Joan Simon Menkes Gift was a group exhibition that highlighted twenty works from a gift of fifty works from the collection of Joan Simon Menkes. The exhibition focused on six artists from the collection who came to prominence in the 1980s—Jonathan Borofsky, Tim Ebner, Larry Johnson, Barbara Kruger, Allan McCollum, and Matt Mullican. These artists shared a common interest in examining a life influenced by media saturation and consumerism.

The exhibition title was meant to allude to the artists’ investigations into the fuzzy line between fiction and reality and into notions of representation in our culture and mass media. Many of these artists and their peers attended or taught at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, California, in the late 1970s and the early 1980s, where the curriculum emphasized a theoretical approach to artmaking, rather than the expression of emotions or material craftsmanship.
