About the artist
Born in Pennsylvania, Theodore Svenningsen has been interested in making and studying art since childhood. He has several academic degrees, beginning with both a BA and an MA in philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles. Also at UCLA, he was advanced to doctoral candidacy with a dissertation titled “The Concept of Beauty in Art Theory.” He dropped out of the doctoral program in order to devote himself to painting and thereafter received his MFA from Otis College of Art and Design. Svenningsen was one of the artist participants in Laguna Art Museum’s Palette to Palate event last year.

About the work
Tracks on Winter Day is from Svenningsen’s Railroad Series. He says: “Growing up around railroads and in snowy areas brought me to an aesthetic interest in the depiction of railroads and snowy conditions. The railroad paintings are influenced by the monumental landscape style of the Northern Sung Dynasty of China; the figures in the monumental vistas of those painting have become transposed as trains and snowy emptiness leading to a hopeful distance.”
