About the artist
“In essence, Clark has brought together tenets of multiple styles – minimalism, abstraction, and realism – with perhaps just a hint of the California School approach … Clark combines his skill as a draughtsman with an innate ability to infuse spirit into his compositions.” –Janet Blake, Laguna Art Museum, 2012.

Timothy J. Clark was born in Santa Ana, California in 1951.  A graduate of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and the Chouinard Art Institute, he serves on the Cal Arts Alumni Board in Valencia, California, and maintains studios in Capistrano Beach, California; New York City; and West Bath, Maine. His paintings have been seen in multiple national solo museum exhibitions in the U.S. and in international group exhibitions from Berlin to Istanbul’s Topkapi Museum. Clark’s next solo exhibition will open in May 2015 at the Loyola University Museum of Art in Chicago.

About the work
Laguna Figure was shown in the solo exhibition of Clark’s works held at Laguna Art Museum in 2012-13. He is an inveterate draftsman who carries a small sketchbook with him at all times. He also regularly makes life drawings from professional models, as here. Training and practice in draftsmanship is central to his work as an artist and to his teaching methods. Noted art historian Gene Cooper regards this drawing as evidence that Clark is “a master visual poet and draftsman.”
