Wolfgang Bloch was born and raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where he discovered surfing and the secluded coastline that still serves as his source of inspiration. His paintings communicate the primal power and hypnotic beauty of the sea, seeming to capture an essence of calmness. His subdued palette and thoughtful use of unexpected and often discarded materials reflect much about the artist himself—unassuming, honest, complicated, and reserved. Bloch’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world and widely published in books and magazines. It is the subject of Wolfgang Bloch: The Colors of Coincidence, published by Chronicle Books in 2008.
