Zin Helena Song was born in Seoul, Korea in 1983 and completed her undergraduate studies there at the Kook Min University before traveling to New York, where she earned her MFA from Long Island University. She makes highly technical paintings in which she layers hard-edged abstractions on top of meticulously built supports. She crafts each shaped panel by hand to accentuate the crisp geometric lines of the pastel color planes. The complexity of the compositions reflect her ideas about order and multiplicity in modern urban society.

Song has named an on-going sequence of works Grid Origami, which sites her efforts in both Western modernism and Asian paper folding traditions: “The interplay of canvas shape, surface-angles, composition, and color all affect the viewer’s perception of the work. I see this as a reflection of the natural phenomenon of society and life.”
