Jane Munro, Keeper of Paintings, Drawings and Prints and Acting Assistant Director of Collections at the Fitzwilliam Museum at the University of Cambridge, will give the keynote lecture for Art & Nature 2018. Her research interests and publications have focused on British and French art from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, much of it interdisciplinary in nature. She is the curator of Degas: A Passion for Perfection and has previously curated Endless Forms: Darwin, Natural Science and the Visual Arts and Silent Partners: Artist and Mannequin from Function to Fetish.

Jane Munro completed a degree in Art History and Philosophy at the University of Kent. She has worked at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge since 1984, assuming the role of Acting Assistant Director of Collections in January 2018. She has taught at the University of Cambridge for many years, principally in History of Art. She has also taught and presented papers at the Yale Center for British Art; the British Council; the National Gallery, London; the British Museum; the Royal Academy of Arts; the National Academy of Sciences, Washington; and the Getty Museum. Her research focuses on European paintings, drawings, and prints from the late 18th to the 20th century, which she has typically approached from an interdisciplinary perspective. Her most recent exhibition, Degas: A Passion for Perfection, is the subject of a film produced by Exhibitions on Screen. She received Apollo magazine’s International Exhibition of the Year Award in 2009 for Endless Forms: Charles Darwin, Natural Science and the Visual Arts and in 2014 for Silent Partners: Artist and Mannequin from Function to Fetish. Currently she is preparing an in-focus exhibition around a newly-acquired portrait of the explorer and archaeologist Giovanni Battista Belzoni. Her other projects include Painting from Nature, an exhibition of landscape oil sketches in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, the Foundation Custodia, Paris, and a team of geographers and volcanologists from the University of Cambridge.
