About the Speaker

Victor Viesca, Ph.D.

Victor Hugo Viesca is Professor and Associate Chair of Liberal Studies at California State University, Los Angeles. His research, teaching, and curatorial projects focus on the urban culture and art of Los Angeles, past and present. Dr. Viesca’s research has been published in Amerasia, American Quarterly, and the Journal for Cultural Research. In 2013-2014 he served as the on-site curator for the pathbreaking exhibition American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Culture, a Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition. In 2018-2019 he co-curated the art exhibition Entre Tinta y Lucha: 45 Years of Self Help Graphics & Art which documents the significant contributions to the fine art of printmaking by the most important Chicana/o art center in Los Angeles. As part of the exhibition Dr. Viesca coordinated a series of artist-led panel discussions, co-edited an exhibition catalogue and, with his students, produced a video oral history of artists affiliated with Self Help Graphics & Art. His current work includes a book project and video oral history on the Chicano Movement struggle to Free Los Tres del Barrio; an art exhibition on the pioneering Los Angeles LGBTQ artist Alex Alferov; an edited collection of essays by the late Nuyorican cultural critic Juan Flores; and a study of the East Los Angeles cultural corridor. Dr. Viesca holds a BA in English and American Literature from the University of California, San Diego and an MA and PhD in American Studies from New York University.
