Living and working in San Francisco from 1900 to 1921, Arthur Putnam was a sculptor of animal subjects in the French animalier tradition. Along with domestic pieces on a tabletop scale such as this pair of nuzzling mountain lions, he undertook commissions for large-scale public works, examples of which are in San Francisco and San Diego.
