Artist Profile

Eric Orr

1939 – 1998

Eric Orr was born in Covington, Kentucky, but lived and worked in Venice, California. Before becoming a central figure of the Light and Space movement, he was a civil rights worker in Mississippi. His artwork is thematically concerned with the “phenomenological exploration of perception,” and he often worked with primitive natural materials, including stone, metal, water, lead, and fire. In his sculptures and installations, he sought to focus upon the individual’s perceptual experience when interacting with the work. His sublime monochromatic paintings were heavily influenced by Buddhist mysticism, in their blurring of space and color to create a calm yet dark setting.
