Artist Profile

Jay DeFeo


Born under the name of Mary Joan DeFeo, she became known as ‘Jay’ DeFeo while attending high school in San Jose, California. At this time, she also found a mentor in her high school art teacher and from there continued her studies in art at University of California, Berkeley. As her career in art developed during 1950s, she became most associated with the Beat generation in the Bay area. In 1988, DeFeo found that she had cancer and dead only a year later.
