Jay McCafferty

b. 1948

Born on February 21, 1948, Jay McCafferty is a California painter, video artist, and filmmaker. Early on in his career, McCafferty earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from California State University at Los Angeles, and continued his studies at University of California at Irvine where he earned an MFA in 1973. McCafferty is now an associate professor and head of the art department at Los Angeles Harbor College. He is most notably known for his “burn paintings,” which is done by burning holes into sheets of paper using the a magnifying glass and the sun’s heat and light.
