Richard Haines


Richard Haines was born on December 29, 1906 in Marian, IA. Early in his career, Haines worked as a designer for a greeting card company before moving on to work under various masters of his time. He traveled to France and studied fresco under La Montaigne St. Hubert and composition under Despujols at the Fontainbleau School, France. Upon return to the states, he became involved with mural work such as the 1936 mural in the Wichita Post Office. In 1941, Haines moved to Los Angeles, CA where he worked for Douglas aircraft and then began a successful career teaching at the Chouinard Art Institute. Haines later held a 20 year position as head of the painting department at Otis Art Institute before his death in 1984.
