Tom Holland

Born in 1936 in Seattle Washington, Tom Holland now lives and works in the Bay area, continuing to add to his fifty year painting career. After having attended Cal Berkeley, Holland traveled to Chile on a Fulbright Grant as a young artist. Upon his return to Berkeley, he began a teaching career at the San Francisco Art Institute. He has also been on the faculty at UCLA and Cal. He received both an NEA Grant and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

In the 1970’s Holland began using materials in his work which were light and strong but which did not require a frame. He continued to make pieces of color out of fiberglass and aluminum which hung on the wall like a stiff tapestry. Holland’s simple materials and innovative approach combining painting with sculpture allowed for his works of art to blend with its environment.

Holland is known as one of California’s most important contemporary artists, and is represented in galleries and museums across the nation.
