This is one of only a few photographs that Hurrell took of artists at work outdoors. Holmwood studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He lived in Laguna Beach, occupying the former home and studio of Edgar Payne. He painted portraits and designed cover illustrations for Colliers, Country Gentlemen, and Literary Digest.
