Los Angeles native Peter Alexander made his reputation in the 1960s as a member of the so-called Finish Fetish movement. Finish Fetish is a tendency among Southern California artists who work with industrial materials rather than traditional artistic ones, and draw upon the technology of the custom car and surfing subcultures. Alexander uses layers of resin to build up basic cubes and wedges that sometimes contain other, mysterious cloudlike or geometric forms within them. Perrino is made with a blue-gray hued resin. It is a cube with perfect edges. The top surface of the cube is rippled, giving the sense of quiet, ocean waves. As light reflects and refracts within the cube, multiple visual experiences of water come into effect.
