Always innovative and independent, Hans Gustav Burkhardt infused important social or political messages into his unique brand of Abstract Expressionism. An antiwar activist, Burkhardt painted many powerful works revealing those sentiments. These expressive abstract works are rich in color, line, and form. The Card Players, however, is exceptional in that it carries no overt political message and its structure draws from the historical model of the Picasso and Cubism.
