Untitled
Acrylic gel on panel, 2010
36 x 36 inches
Gift of Peter Mendenhall
2013.004

Albert Contreras begins his works by pouring the paint onto panels to create smooth bases. As critic John Yau explained, “Over these he subsequently applies a mixture of paint and medium with a consistency somewhere between cake frosting and putty.” Working his material while still wet, Contreras shows the movement of the paint, which is collected and pushed to the edges and gathered at the bottom of the “x” form.
