A revered figure throughout the California art world, the late painter, sculptor, and draftsman Tony DeLap was best known for his use of playfully illusionistic techniques combined with perfect craftsmanship. He was a skilled magician as well as an artist, and brought some of the spirit of the magic trick to his art. His work resists easy categorization, and he was never happy to be called a Minimalist. “I donʼt want to minimize anything,” he once said. “What I want to do is complicate.”
