In this lecture, Curatorial Fellow Jean Stern will discuss a selection of historical, California female artists of the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Join Stern as he examines the achievements of these women artists who created impressive works of art in a variety of styles during this dynamic time in California history. Come learn about and celebrate these pioneering women artists as many of them had the same education and artistic training as the men, yet, like women in other fields, they were caught in the inequities of their time. Stern will also reflect on the relative freedoms that many of these California artists enjoyed.
