In this lecture, art historian and LAM Curatorial Fellow Jean Stern will discuss the life and art of Millard Sheets (1907-1989) in a slide-illustrated lecture. Millard Sheets was one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century. Raised on a ranch in Pomona, he developed a love of the land and of horses, both of which would be manifest in his art. Proficient in oil paints and watercolor, he is also known for his monumental mosaics that once graced Home Savings and Loan buildings throughout California. At Notre Dame University, Sheets produced a large mosaic for the library that the students fondly refer to as “Touchdown Jesus.”
The lecture consists of about 90 slides and lasts approximately 50 minutes with time afterwards for discussion and questions.
