Inspiration

The clowns that Wayne Thiebaud depicts in the exhibition Wayne Thiebaud: Clowns display a wide array of emotions. Some of them look happy, while others seem sad and withdrawn. In some ways this exhibition highlights the difference between the emotions that we really feel and the faces that we sometimes “put on” for the world.

Instructions

Make It Your Own

  • Be inspired by Wayne Thiebaud’s clown paintings to create a collage that highlights a specific emotion.
  • A collage is a piece of art made by combining different materials together to create an image.
  • For this activity, we suggest using magazine and newspaper clippings, or other found images.
  • Start by finding an image that will be the base of your clown face. (You can even print out an image of your own face)!
  • After you have found your base image, glue or tape other types of paper and materials on top of the original image in order to create your own unique clown collage. You can also use pens or pencils to add marks to your collage.
  • Experiment! Have fun! Please share your completed work with us on Instagram using the hashtag #LAMLabAtHome.
