Yreina Cervantez's Mask

In Danza Ocelotl, Yreina Cervantez created a self-portrait in which she is holding a mask. The mask is made up of different icons: her nose is a jaguar, her cheeks are hearts and skulls, and her chin is a crescent moon. Cervantez created this to showcase her culture and to show pride in her heritage and who she is as a person.

This work is associated with Self-Help Graphics, the East Los Angeles printmaking workshop and arts center that emerged from the Chicano movement of the 1960s.
