Inspiration

Art and Nature

Every year Laguna Art Museum commissions an artist to create an installation that responds to nature.
Artists usually choose to create these temporary works of art outdoors on Main Beach, and the only evidence we have that the pieces ever existed is through documentation in the form of photographs and film.

Ephemeral Art

Art that only lasts for a short period of time is called Ephemeral Art. Many artists, including Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson, built entire bodies of work inspired by this idea. If you have ever built a sandcastle on the beach, you have made ephemeral art! The experience of making the art and the documentation of the final product are as important as the work itself.
