What's It All About?

The Life and Art of Arthur Grover Rider is a slide-illustrated lecture on one of the most interesting California artists.  Born in Chicago, Rider studied at the Chicago Academy of the Fine Arts.  Yet, his life and art changed when in 1911, he attended a lecture at the Art Institute of Chicago by the great Spanish Impressionist Joachim Sorolla (1863-1923).  For several years afterwards, Rider worked as a scenic designer in Chicago while he spent each summer in Valencia, Spain.

In 1928, he came to Laguna Beach but a few years later, moved to Los Angeles to work as a scenic artist, first at 20th Century Fox, and later at MGM, retiring in 1970.  Many of his paintings were painted on multiple trips to Mexico.

The lecture features archival photographs and shows numerous examples of his works.  It lasts approximately 45 minutes, with time afterwards for questions and answers.
